Press Release: GODSPELL

Hurricane High School’s Theater Arts Department will proudly present the classic rock 'n' roll musical Godspell in the school Auditorium Friday through Tuesday (no Sunday!) Dec. 8-12.

Godspell Is a landmark in musical theater history.  Its gentle, often funny, sometimes gut-wrenching, telling of the story of the Gospel of St Matthew (mostly in the words of the book itself) captivated Broadway and the world when it opened in New York in 1971, and it has held audiences' hearts in its hands through numberless tours and revivals since.

The story opens with a Tower of Babel-like confusion of philosophies and political platforms, broken by the clarion call of a man named John urging people to "prepare…the way" for a revolution of Love.  Enter then a mysterious, radiant stranger who rounds up the confused rabble and tests its faith, strength, credulity, and courage – with confrontation, adventure, renewal, stories, heartbreak, hope, and timeless songs like "Save the People," "It's All For The Best," "Day By Day," "Bless The Lord," and "By My Side."

HHS has set the story in a city slum scorched by hate and abandoned by joy – until a mismatched band of resourceful vagabonds and their enigmatic, gentle leader/teacher bring in a new age - and good news - of unconditional Love.

Godspell is a tender but uncompromising plea for peace and unity in times of trouble and contentment: a crown jewel among the treasures of American theater.

Showtimes are 7pm with a special family matinee at 2pm on Sat. Dec. 9.  Ticket prices are $7 (general)/$6 (senior citizens)/$5 (students from any school with ID) and $20 for immediate family groups.

A special Family Matinee on Sat. Dec. 9 will sell individual seats for $4, and family groups will pay $15.

Seating is first-come/first-served.  Intermission will feature a free "feast" onstage with the actors and technicians. Some proceeds from concessions and sales of "Lights of the World" (to be turned on by audience members during the show) will go toward sending a group of local students and parents to New York City next June.

Come celebrate a thrilling story of bravery, betrayal, devotion, rage, and forgiveness!  Godspell is an experience that will resonate with you forever.
